Michigan educators are receiving support to improve campus safety through three new toolkits released by the Michigan State Police's Office of School Safety. Col. James F. Grady II emphasized, "Strengthening your school safety plan is one of the best proactive moves you can make," with the toolkits offering guidance on crisis communication, emergency management, and monitoring student online activity, according to the Michigan State Police.
Funded by federal resources, the toolkits provide a clear roadmap for developing effective safety plans and aligning roles with strategies. These resources are available to schools through the Michigan State Police Office of School Safety website to help create safer learning environments, as reported by the Michigan State Police.
The Michigan State Police Office of School Safety, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Education, offers three toolkits to support K-12 school safety. The School Crisis Communication Planning toolkit provides guidance on messaging during emergencies. The Emergency Preparedness for School Events toolkit outlines steps to take before, during, and after school activities. The Best Practices for Investigating Student Online Activity toolkit provides a framework for ethically reviewing students’ online activity. The program is funded by grant #2019-YS-BX-0084 from the Bureau of Justice Assistance as part of Michigan’s FY19 STOP School Violence Technology and Threat Assessment Solutions for Safer Schools Program and is administered by the Michigan State Police Office.
