With the digital world holding vast amounts of our personal data, the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) is stepping up this Cybersecurity Awareness Month with tips to keep that info out of the wrong hands. According to an article from the UIA, Director Jason Palmer emphasizes the importance of vigilance, "We encourage all workers and employers to be aware of any attempts to steal personal identifying information that allows access to their accounts. There are a number of bad actors out there who would look for an opportunity to strike.” The UIA, cognizant of the evolving tactics of cybercriminals, is doubling down on its protective measures and offering guidance to help users fortify their own digital defenses, per the Michigan Labor and Economic Opportunity.

The agency provided a list of 10 DOs and DON'Ts aimed at curbing the risk of falling prey to nefarious online activities. These tips include regular password updates for Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM) and MiLOGIN accounts, staying wary of phishing emails, and verifying banking information routinely. In addition, they advise against sharing personal information over unexpected calls and urge prompt action in updating security software.

Beyond providing tips, the UIA has a strong track record of combating fraud, with its Fraud Manager program that checks for irregularities in claims. They actively collaborate with various local, state, and federal agencies to identify and prosecute criminal activity – a joint effort that has led to numerous fraud charges and convictions. Since March 2020, this coordination has seen 165 people charged with unemployment fraud, 125 convicted, and 108 sentenced to prison time and restitution.

The UIA is not stopping there. A critical element in their ongoing battle against fraud is the upcoming launch of MiUI, a new computer system with advanced anti-fraud features, scheduled for full operation by the summer of 2026. This system is set to be a lynchpin in transforming the UIA into a benchmark for swift, equitable, and fraud-free service. In addition to technical updates, UIA's engagement includes user-centered initiatives such as online coaching sessions, a comprehensive guide for federal workers, and the Advocacy Program offering no-cost legal advice. These resources are available on the UIA's website, aiming to better serve Michigan's workforce and business community.
