In a late-night patrol turned apprehension, Minneapolis police officers detained a driver on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. According to a Facebook post by the Minneapolis Police Department, the individual was caught driving in the wrong direction, northbound in a southbound lane near Cedar Avenue South and 17th Avenue South.
During the traffic stop, officers observed multiple indicators of impairment, including a collection of empty alcohol containers and drug paraphernalia within the vehicle. The driver's unsuccessful attempt to navigate the streets of Minneapolis came to an end as law enforcement intervened: "officers saw several empty beer cans and bottles, along with drug paraphernalia inside the car," as reported by the department's social channel. Due to the evidence, the driver faced arrest under suspicion of a DWI, and their driving privileges were subsequently revoked.
The incident, which serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by impaired driving, prompted the police to issue a public safety advisory. They urged the community to plan for sober transportation if alcohol consumption is on their itinerary. The Minneapolis Police Department's message is unambiguous: "There’s no reason to drive after drinking. If you plan on drinking, line up a sober road."
While statistics on wrong-way driving accidents vary, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration acknowledges that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a significant factor in these often fatal collisions. The recent arrest in Minneapolis is a part of an ongoing endeavor by the police department to mitigate such preventable tragedies.
