In an exercise aimed at educating the public, the dangers of such a common mistake were vividly shown. According to a social media post by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, applying water to a grease fire can not only be ineffective, but it can also have "explosive — and devastating — results."
During the kickoff event, Maple Grove Fire-Rescue highlighted how quickly these types of fires can escalate out of control. While the intention to quickly extinguish a fire is understandable, throwing water on grease is a critical error that can rapidly make the situation much worse. As stated in a Facebook post by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the department thanked Minnesota Live for the opportunity "to educate Minnesotans on how safe cooking can prevent fires."
Grease fires occur when cooking oil becomes too hot and begins to ignite, which can happen suddenly, leaving little time for a proper response. The correct approach involves smothering the fire by covering the pan with a metal lid or using a fire extinguisher appropriate for grease fires. Baking soda or salt can also be used to help suffocate smaller flames.
