The saga of Oakley Carlson, a 5-year-old girl reported missing in 2021, has taken a sorrowful turn as a court declared her "legally dead." Oakley's former foster mother expressed shock upon hearing this development, a demarcation that punctuates a nearly four-year period of uncertainty and anguish. As KING 5 reported, the woman who once cared for Oakley was unprepared for this jarring legal pronouncement.
This court declaration, however, does not signify an end to the pursuit of truth and justice in Oakley's case. Grays Harbor County Sheriff's detectives have maintained that it changes not the vigor of their investigation. There is a discourse involving the prosecutor's office regarding potential charges against Bowers and Carlson for a no-body homicide case. Despite no formal decisions, the conversation is ongoing, as FOX 13 Seattle conveyed, Bowers, Oakley's mother, was released from prison on September 23, after serving a sentence for unrelated fraud and identity theft charges.
Complications in the case are compounded by the past behavior of Oakley's parents, Bowers and Carlson, who have previously been convicted of child abuse in a separate case and were found to have provided conflicting and false information about their daughter’s disappearance. Even though these complexities abound, no charges connected to Oakley's disappearance have yet been filed. The lamentable facts of this case spurred legislative action, with an effort to pass the Oakley Carlson Act, meant to protect foster children and prevent easy reunification with abusive parents. Unfortunately, despite a reintroduction in 2024 following a stall, the bill has not yet come to fruition, as reported by KOMO News.
The decision to declare Oakley dead has reverberated through the community and stirred a myriad of responses. A statement shared by an observer reflects the pain such a declaration can inflict: "Imagine being a parent and finding out from someone else that your child has been declared dead. The pain and shock of that moment are indescribable."
