The Modesto Police Department has released details regarding the regulations that will be enforced during today's "No Kings" demonstrations in Modesto, as expected, the department emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and public safety, articulating this stance through a social media post the department stated, "We respect and support everyone’s right to peacefully assemble and express their opinions," and the assurance of proactive measures to keep events tranquil for all participants was communicated in a list of specific items prohibited at the gathering, citing the Modesto Municipal Codes.
In preparation for the demonstrations, Modesto Police have made it clear that certain objects are off-limits, including potentially weaponizable items such as lumber, metal or plastic pipes, baseball bats, and projectile launchers, as well as defensive gear like gas masks and impact-resistant helmets, but this directive coincides with the department's broader approach to balance free speech with the need to limit violence and disorder during public assemblies. Restrictions also extend to everyday items that could be repurposed amid a tumultuous protest environment, like glass bottles and umbrellas, unless rain justifies the latter's use. The regulations also lean on the side of caution by banning items such as balloons or containers possibly contain harmful substances.
The prohibitions were outlined in a post from Modesto Police's official Facebook page, with the police appealing to the community's cooperation for maintaining order. In accordance with Chapter 23 of the Modesto Municipal Codes, violators of these regulations, which have been in effect since August 2019, may face misdemeanor charges; however, allowances are made for items that aid mobility, such as canes and walkers for individuals who require them to participate in public demonstrations.
With these measures, the MPD reiterates its focus on preventing discord while not infringing on the constitutional liberties extended to all citizens, stating "Our focus is on keeping the community safe and ensuring events stay peaceful for everyone," as mentioned in the Facebook post.
