A Monroe man has been arrested in connection with a child exploitation investigation, the Monroe Police Department announced. Assisted by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), and the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, local authorities conducted a month-long probe that led to the apprehension of 44-year-old Matthew William Gaylord.
The investigation was sparked by a report received through the CyberTipline approximately one month ago. The Monroe Police Department worked to extensively investigate the digital footprints and conduct field operations which allowed them to finally execute a search warrant at Gaylord's residence on Manchester Avenue in Monroe. According to details provided by the official Monroe Police Department Facebook page, this led to Gaylord being taken into custody facing multiple charges, including 1st Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Minor and Secret Peeping, along with a drug possession offense.
In the wake of the arrest, Monroe Police Chief William Bolen emphasized the collaborative effort, stating, "This case demonstrates the importance of strong partnerships between local, state, and federal agencies in protecting children and holding offenders accountable. We are grateful for the continued collaboration with HSI, SBI, and the ICAC Task Force." Gaylord is now awaiting judicial proceedings at the Union County Jail, with the investigation reportedly ongoing. The Monroe Police Department has not released any additional information at this time.
