A fire erupted at a multi-family residence in the 1100 block of California Street yesterday, prompting a robust response from local firefighters. The incident, which caused significant damage to the building and displaced residents, was reported at 4:35 PM, as documented by the City of Mountain View's official website. Occupants could evacuate on their own before the arrival of emergency services.
Firefighters were dispatched one minute after the emergency call and reached the scene within three minutes. They confronted flames erupting from the exterior of the building, which had ascended into the attic due to the building's old design. Despite the challenges posed by the structure's age, firefighters implemented an aggressive exterior attack on the fire, which was paired with a preconnected hose line inside the home to control the spread of the fire.
An overhaul was necessary to prevent any potential resurgence of the fire, leading crews to cut through parts of the ceiling, walls, and roof. Thermal imaging cameras played a crucial role in ensuring the fire was completely eradicated by allowing firefighters to detect heat hidden behind the drywall. The operation was thorough, ensuring no flames lingered to pose a further threat.
The residents, three adults, received immediate aid with a $250 gift card from the California Professional Firefighters Union Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency Program, after coordinating their own temporary accommodations. The Mountain View Police Department managed traffic around the incident for around three hours, assisting with the presence of fire units and equipment on the scene. As for the fire's origins, the recycling bin was identified as the accidental ignition point, attributed to the improper disposal of smoking materials.
An estimated $150,000 worth of damage was reported, affecting both the building's structure and contents. Once the fire was entirely extinguished and the scene was safe, the fire crews handed the building over to its management. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the blaze.
