In a recent turn of events, Multnomah County's leadership vocally opposes what they call "authoritarian behavior" from the federal administration, following a court ruling against the deployment of the National Guard in Portland. In a statement released by Multnomah County, Chair Jessica Vega Pederson, joined by Commissioners Meghan Moyer, Shannon Singleton, and Julia Brim-Edwards, expressed satisfaction with the decision, underscoring the absence of any "foreign invasion or insurrection" in the city.
"Today's court decision — from a federal judge appointed by President Trump himself — affirms what we already knew: Deploying the military to Portland is not needed," said the county officials. They pledged continued support and provision of services to communities they believe have been the target of the administration. According to Multnomah County's statement, the county board stands united against what they perceive as intimidation by the federal administration.
The officials also emphasized the strength derived from the community's diversity, declaring an unwavering stance in the face of the administration's tactics. "We will not be intimidated by bullying tactics, and we will lead with values that recognize our community’s diversity is our greatest strength," the commissioners remarked in a collective statement. This decision comes as the latest development in an ongoing dispute between state and federal authorities over the need for federal intervention in local protests and civil unrest.
The county's top officials all signed onto the statement, providing a formidable front in opposition to the proposed deployment of military forces. As the situation continues to unfold, additional statements from other commissioners may still emerge. For now, the existing voices serve as a testament to the solidarity amongst the Multnomah County leadership in preserving the autonomy of local governance and safeguarding civil liberties amid heightened national tensions. The statement also reiterates the board's commitment to “provide services, hope and opportunity" for affected individuals.
