As the November 4 Statewide Special Election approaches, Nevada County has stepped up its game with the inauguration of its new Ballot Processing Center. According to a Nevada County government announcement, the facility located at 12740 Loma Rica Drive, Grass Valley, is a significant upgrade from the previous setup—offering ample space to accommodate the intricate processes of democracy.
The new center is a spacious venue, flaunting about 2,000 square feet dedicated to ballot processing, and an additional 1,700 square feet serving as a warehouse. Voting by mail has already started here, with operations running daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., which includes the sorting of ballots, signature verification, and the crucial step of ballot extraction and scanning. In a bid for better transparency, Registrar of Voters Armando Salud-Ambriz extended an open invitation in a recent county's announcement, “We encourage anyone who’s interested to come see how the process works.”
What's truly different about this center, however, is the improved accessibility for public observation—an essential aspect of an open electoral process. The cramped constraints at Nevada County Government Center are now a thing of the past, as the new facility can comfortably host about a dozen observers at a time, a far cry from the prior limit of two. This expansion is not just a spatial one but a testament to years of planning and the vision of former officials such as Gregory Diaz, who initiated the endeavor before his retirement in January 2023.
In terms of voter convenience, the ballots for the special election were dispatched on October 6, and voters have the choice to mail them back or drop them off in designated boxes. Those looking to cast their vote in person can head to the Nevada County Government Center or, starting October 25, the Truckee Tahoe Airport Community Room. Additional Vote Centers will gradually become operational from November 1. Voter and ballot status can be tracked online, a service aimed at keeping voters informed and involved.
