On August 18, the community of Koʻolauloa was offered a new resource for families struggling with homelessness. The Hauʻula Family Assessment Center officially began serving the area after a ceremony attended by state and city officials. The center is designed to provide a safe temporary shelter for families in crisis and to assist them on a path towards long-term housing. According to a statement obtained by the Office of the Governor, the facility comes as part of a concerted effort by the state of Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services and the City and County of Honolulu Department of Community Services.
Beyond the immediate provision of shelter, the Hauʻula FAC aims to quickly connect families to essential services. These services include health coverage, food, and financial aid. "By providing virtual connections to public benefits, we can help families with access to important benefits without the burden of traveling long distances,” DHS Director Ryan Yamane detailed in the Office of the Governor's release.
Anton Krucky, director of DCS, revealed the importance of collaboration between city and state in tackling the homelessness issue. "In one year’s time we have opened four family shelters, all in partnership with the state," Krucky said. "It is a true testament to collaboration expanding housing opportunities, because all families deserve to be housed." The joint venture indicates an ongoing commitment to creating viable solutions for the homelessness conundrum in Hawaiʻi, as sttaed by the Office of the Governor.
The Hauʻula FAC, managed by the local nonprofit Corazon Hawaii, opened on July 31 and has already begun to make a difference in the community. At present, the center houses five families, totaling 22 individuals. Its capability to serve is ambitious, aiming to shelter up to 24 families within its first year of operation. Governor’s Homeless Coordinator Jun Yang expressed during the inauguration, “May this center be a beacon of hope and a reminder that when we work together, we can create real and lasting change,” as per the Office of the Governor announcement.
The opening of the Hauʻula FAC underscores notable advancements in the region's drive to address the complexities of homelessness. It represents the power of unified efforts in fashioning a compassionate response to the plight of vulnerable families, offering more than just a place of shelter, but a cornerstone where stability begins to take form.
