San Antonio residents and visitors can now navigate the northwest side of the city with more ease, as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) celebrates the opening of a new flyover ramp at the Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 interchange. The newly opened ramp promises a direct route from westbound I-10 to eastbound Loop 1604, streamlining traffic near UTSA Boulevard and The Shops at La Cantera, as reported by KTSA.
The ramp is part of a larger $1.4 billion improvement project designed to alleviate congestion along the 23-mile Loop 1604 corridor, with this particular section near recreational and shopping hubs becoming operational since 5 a.m. today "The project is planned in six separate segments, with four segments currently under construction," TxDOT spokesperson Jennifer Serold previously told MySA, and now with the new ramp, the project crosses an important milestone.
The Loop 1604 North Expansion project, a Texas Clear Lanes initiative, has steadily made progress as evidenced by the sequence of openings - the first flyover became operational in December 2024, and the one just prior to this opened in September. Listed by KTSA, the flyovers are part of a larger scheme that includes expanding main lanes, adding high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, and providing bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. With five flyovers now complete, the project is still aiming to open three more by the end of 2026.
Despite the continuous construction activity, TxDOT assures that efforts are being made to minimize disruption to the local community; work is actively being structured to create the least impact to traffic with safety as a priority.
