Flags at New York State government buildings will be flown at half-staff today, from sunrise to sunset, by order of Governor Kathy Hochul. This observance honors retired New York State Police Trooper Mark A. Ondus, who passed away from an illness linked to his service at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 attacks.

"I am directing flags across New York State to be lowered in honor of retired New York State Police Trooper Mark A. Ondus," Governor Hochul said in a press release. Reflecting on his service, she continued, "Today, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Trooper Ondus’ family and loved ones as we honor his life and memory. Trooper Ondus served the community when New York needed heroes the most, and we are deeply grateful for his steadfast service, dedication, and sacrifice."

Trooper Ondus passed away last Thursday. He is survived by his wife, Tammy, and his children Charles, Sebastian, Nicholas, and Tauni. He served for 26 years before retiring on January 20, 2021.
