Last night, North Canton's Civic Leadership Academy (CLA) marked a milestone as its inaugural class of 2025 received their accolades during a City Council meeting, with Mayor Stroia doing the honors of distributing certificates of completion, the City of North Canton's official website reports. Seven individuals—Kathy Christ, Kevin Jones, Santana Lopez, Brian Miner, Holly Pierpont, Matt Rohrbaugh, and Jeff Stocker—concluded the six-month journey designed to deepen their understanding and raise their engagement in civic matters.
The program, a rigorous education in municipal governance and community leadership, saw its members dedicating half a year to learn the ins and outs of how a city functions. Their commitment was apparent as they balanced the program with their personal and professional lives, creating a fabric of informed citizenship that Mayor Stroia and councilmembers were quick to commend. The academy intends to spearhead a wave of informed civic engagement across North Canton, an experience that the participants shared with the community. Leadership opined that the learning went both ways.
At the graduation event, city officials took the opportunity not just to celebrate the achievements of the outgoing class but also to express gratitude for their willingness to dive into complex city processes. Their participation reflects a broader desire for civic involvement that can only bolster the practices of democracy within North Canton.
Each of the seven graduates now steps out with a newfound sense of empowerment to effect change within their communities, equipped with the knowledge and tools garnered from the program. These freshly minted advocates are expected to lead change initiatives, participate more fully in government, and inspire others to take an active role in shaping their city's future. As they embark on their next chapter, the seeds planted during their time at the CLA promise to yield a more engaged citizenry; one that is more robust and vibrant because of their efforts, and as the council meeting room echoed with applause, it was a testament to the potential that rests within civic-minded individuals ready to serve their communities.
