Houston's energy sector is set to see significant growth as Governor Greg Abbott announces the construction of a new NRG Energy, Inc. natural gas facility. Set to be built at the existing TH Wharton Generating Station in Harris County, this facility has been marked as a qualified project under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program. An infusion of about $360 million in capital by NRG will be channeled into the creation of this new, simple cycle 456 MW natural gas facility.

"Texas energy powers our state’s booming economy," Governor Abbott stated in remarks released October 21st. He emphasized the importance of the project in supporting the state's electrical grid and in ensuring the availability of reliable and affordable energy for both homes and businesses in Texas. This new facility aligns with Texas's approach of investing in resilient, dispatchable energy sources to reinforce the energy grid and cater to the considerable electricity demands of the region.

NRG and the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) reached a Texas Energy Fund loan agreement in August for this facility. If everything stays on track, operations are scheduled to begin by Summer 2026. As part of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas Houston Load Zone, the plant will power not just Houston but also nearby areas like Pasadena and The Woodlands.

Adding insight into the economic impact of the initiative, Robert Gaudette, Executive Vice President and President of NRG Business and Wholesale Operations, highlighted the project's benefits, "NRG's new simple cycle 456 MW natural gas facility at the TH Wharton power plant is not only generating significant construction related job opportunities, but once online in 2026, the completed facility will provide additional permanent jobs, enhanced grid stability and regional economic growth," as per a statement quoted by the Office of the Texas Governor's announcement. He thanked Governor Abbott and other local partners, marking the project's integration with JETI as a testament to effective public-private collaborations in the state.

Educational institutions have also backed the project, with the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD pointing to the venture's positive implications for energy reliability and job creation. Karen Smith, the district's Chief Financial Officer, said, "The TH Wharton project will accommodate the growing energy demand in the district and Houston area," underscoring the region's support for the development. With the grid's reinforcement on the line, the project is poised to take a significant load—the growing energy needs of Texas' sprawling metropolis.
