Travelers flying through Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK) can now experience the fresh fruits of the airport's labor with Phase 1 of their restroom renovation completed, announced the Port of Oakland today. "We celebrate the completion of the first phase of our restroom renovation program," said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation Craig Simon, noting that OAK's Terminal 1 passengers will benefit from the significant upgrades. Details from the Port of Oakland reveal the revamped restrooms are now flush with upscale design, durability, and accessibility.
The overhaul includes Gate 3 Men’s Restroom, where travelers will find the modernization complete with LED stall occupancy indicators and hands-free sinks. At Gate 4, women can rejoice at the reopening of a restroom that had been closed since 2011 and has been expanded to enhance comfort. Gate 7's new all-gender & family restrooms, and Oakland's first lactation suite, provide solace with converted men's restroom space, something parents and families long awaited. "Our team is excited to continue this important work in the program’s next phases," Simon said, per the Port of Oakland.
These renovated spaces marry function with aesthetics, and each stall is now spacious and ADA-compliant, allowing for easy navigation even with luggage. Centralized sink areas reduce crowd clutter while upgraded LED fixtures cast a soothing glow throughout. Sound-absorbing materials promise a quieter experience, a detail not overlooked by the weary traveler searching for a tranquil pit stop. The Port of Oakland highlights that the first of these phases was made possible through a generous capital investment of $17 million, which included a $10 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Terminal Program.
