The Oakland Police Department is currently investigating the death of an individual who died in custody after a reported break-in and subsequent medical emergency. The incident transpired yesterday in the 11000 block of Ettrick Street, according to a report by the Oakland Police Department.
Officers were dispatched to the location around 4:15 AM following reports of a break-in at a residence. Simultaneously, they were alerted to someone nearby experiencing a medical emergency. Police believe the individual at the center of the medical distress call and the suspect in the break-in were the same. When law enforcement arrived, they found the individual inside the residence and attempted to detain them. A brief struggle is reported to have ensued. Subsequently, the individual became unresponsive following their detention.
Paramedic personnel arrived, administered medical aid, and transported the individual to a local hospital. Unfortunately, the individual later passed away. The OPD’s statement on the matter included that officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such circumstances.
The investigation into the death is multifaceted, engaging not only the OPD's Homicide Section and Internal Affairs Bureau but also the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency (CPRA), and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
