As the deadline for a potential lapse in SNAP benefits approaches, Oklahoma Democratic leaders are voicing concern over the state’s response to the ongoing federal government shutdown. Around 700,000 residents—including children, veterans, and seniors—could lose access to food assistance when the program funding ends tomorow.
According to a statement on the Oklahoma House of Representatives website, House Democratic Leader Cyndi Munson urged the Governor to call a Special Session to allocate state funds to food banks, nonprofits, and other organizations supporting residents in need. She emphasized that other states have provided similar assistance and urged immediate action to prevent disruptions.
Senate Democratic Leader Julia Kirt also called attention to the potential impact on children, stating that the state should not rely solely on charities to meet basic needs. She stressed the importance of government responsibility in addressing food insecurity.
Both House and Senate Democratic caucus leaders are pressing for swift action to ensure continued support for Oklahomans who depend on SNAP benefits.
