Orange County commissioners have cast their votes and solidified the future political landscape of the area with the approval of a new redistricting map. In a notable decision yesterday, the map known as Map 7-B was selected by a vote of 5-2 to redefine the county's districts, as reported by WESH. The newly approved layout is set to significantly change the representation for residents by increasing the number of commission seats from six to eight.

The process was set into motion by a charter amendment passed last November by voters, calling for the expansion of commission districts. The debate was not without its complexities, as local concerns were taken into consideration. Winter Park, now shaded in dark green, finds itself aligned with East Orange County, creating new connections across the region all the way to the county's more rural east side.

Winter Park Mayor Sheila DeCiccio was actively involved in the debate, expressing a strong preference for Winter Park to remain aligned with Maitland, citing shared priorities between the two cities. "If Winter Park and Pine Hills are in the same district, Winter Park will dominate Pine Hills. This is wrong because Pine Hills will dominate in either map because of their population base," Mayor DeCiccio told FOX 35 Orlando. Despite these concerns, the commission chose to place Winter Park in District 5, while Maitland will join Orlo Vista and Pine Hills in District 7.

The new districts are slated to be in place come next year's vote. This move is expected to not only reshape the commission but also to ignite a primary election for the new district seats in August 2026, followed closely by the general election in November of the same year.
