In an unfolding political skirmish over troop deployment in Oregon, House Majority Leader Ben Bowman has publicly criticized the Trump Administration's decision, which the 9th Circuit Court allowed. The acceptance follows concerns over recent protests in Portland, and the Administration's claim of a "threat of rebellion." Bowman's statement was issued in response, acknowledging the protests but downplaying the supposed threat posed by demonstrators, describing them as clad in "inflatable frogs and chicken costumes."
According to the document released by the House Democrats, Bowman's rebuke calls for unity among Oregonians against what he perceives as federal overreach. He has urged his Republican colleagues to align with state leaders and the local community in opposition to the federal government's actions, stating, "Portland is moving in the right direction. Sadly, the Trump Administration is actively making things harder for local leaders."
The deployment of troops has been a contentious issue, with local authorities and state leaders voicing concerns over the potential for escalating tensions. The Portland Metro Chamber and demonstrators who protested peacefully over the weekend were noted for speaking out against this development. Bowman underscored the involvement of tens of thousands of Oregonians, who he indicated were advocating for a different, more cooperative approach, rather than what he deemed a confrontation set up by the Trump Administration.
"Oregonians should be united against this action. Instead of blaming local law enforcement, I call on my Republican colleagues to join state leaders, local elected officials, the Portland Metro Chamber, and the tens of thousands of Oregonians who peacefully protested this weekend in speaking out against this clear federal overreach," said Bowman, pointing to a broad coalition formed in the wake of the 9th Circuit's decision. The statement from Bowman reflects a growing sentiment among some officials that federal military intervention in local disturbances is not only unwarranted but also potentially harmful to the fabric of local governance and community trust.
