Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, has received a major financial boost with a $20 million donation from Panera Bread founder Ron Shaich. The university announced that Shaich, an alumnus and trustee, made the contribution to support significant academic and operational changes—marking the largest gift in Clark’s history.

According to CBS News, the donation will fund a "transformation plan" introduced in June, which aims to modernize academic programs and strengthen the university’s structure. Clark University President David Fithian said the gift supports essential changes to guide the university toward long-term improvement.

The plan focuses on expanding key areas such as climate, environment and society, media arts, computing and design, and health and human behavior. It may also involve a faculty reduction of up to 30% over three years. Shaich, who founded the General Store on campus as a student, told Mass Live that he wants his contribution to make a meaningful impact and help Clark adapt to current challenges in higher education.

The university is facing declining enrollment and increasing costs, challenges shared by many institutions nationwide. Shaich’s donation is expected to strengthen Clark’s academic programming, sustainability initiatives, and financial aid offerings.

Shaich has a longstanding relationship with Clark University, having received an honorary degree in 2014 and previously donating $5 million to establish the Shaich Family Alumni and Student Engagement Center. His latest contribution represents continued alumni support as Clark works to implement its long-term strategic plan.
