Amid increased security measures at Wayne High School's football game against Springfield, concerns regarding student safety at high schools in the Phoenix Union High School District remain at the forefront. The heightened security at Wayne High School, detailed in an announcement by the district, is set to include limited ticket sales and mandatory school ID checks. Reportedly, the home side of Heidkamp Stadium will sell 2,000 general admission tickets, while just 1,000 tickets will be available for visitors. According to Yahoo News, these security measures were unveiled following recent violent events at district schools.
The decision to bolster safety at the football game arrives on the heels of a violent confrontation at Carl Hayden High School that sent several students to the hospital. This brawl, captured on video and widely circulated among students and parents, involves a student left convulsing in a pool of blood, marking another severe incident within the district in less than a month. Jeremiah Cota, a Phoenix Union High School District board member, has openly criticized the absence of resource officers on campuses, stating his concerns to FOX 10 Phoenix, "My fears are just like the parents': is the kid going to come home safe at the end of the day? And I frankly can't answer that in an honest way."
Despite these incidents, the Phoenix Union High School District Board has consistently rejected proposals to station state-funded officers at the school campuses. Cota was adamant about the board's duty to protect its students, invoking Arizona Revised Statutes in his plea for stronger security measures. "We have what's called a duty of care," Cota told FOX 10 Phoenix, asserting that the law mandates the district to ensure students' safety both in the classroom and on school property.
At Wayne High School, a different approach aims to preemptively avoid such incidents. In addition to the aforementioned ticket constraints, all attending students are required to present valid school IDs, and elementary students must be accompanied by an adult. Switching sides during the game is strictly prohibited to further maintain order. The impact of these measures on overall safety remains to be seen; however, law enforcement will be visibly increased, with extra lighting in parking lots and other areas around the stadium, as per the details shared by Yahoo News.
