Looking to pitch in and support your local community? Placer County's Free Tax Prep program, in partnership with the United Way and the IRS, is calling for community members to volunteer for the 2026 tax season, as reported by Placer County's official website. The program extends vital tax preparation assistance to low-income individuals and families living in the area, ensuring they can file their taxes appropriately and could potentially maximize their refunds.
No prior experience is needed, since comprehensive in-person training for all volunteers begins on January 7—whether you're an expert or a novice, there's room for your generous contribution, and flexible training options mean you can brush up on the necessary skills however suits you best. Volunteers can choose roles ranging from personal tax assistants to greeters or quality reviewers and can work through a variety of schedules. The virtual program runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and there’s a selection of locations including Rocklin and Auburn, along with specified times in Roseville and Lincoln, plus pop-up events yet to be arranged in places like Foresthill, Colfax, and Kings Beach, according to the Placer County's official website.
Last year's efforts by the Free Tax Prep program led to a significant impact, where it returned $440,583 in state and federal refunds back into the pockets of Placer County families. Human Services Director Greg Geisler underscored the mutual benefits of the volunteer program, stating, "Volunteers gain practical experience and the reward of knowing they’ve helped neighbors achieve financial stability," as mentioned on the Placer County website.
