H Mart's Permanent Sign Goes Up in South Sacramento, But Opening Date Stays a Mystery

A permanent sign now hangs on the front of the long-awaited H Mart building at 6366 Mack Rd. in South Sacramento's Valley Mack Plaza, but the Korean grocery giant still has not announced a specific opening date. Renovations are continuing at the site, leaving neighbors who have watched the storefront sit dark for years still waiting for a firm move-in date.

The building is set to become the 58,000-square-foot home of H Mart, which will occupy the space formerly filled by a Food Source grocery, according to the Sacramento Bee. That anchor spot became vacant when parent company Raley's declined to renew Food Source's lease amid falling sales, shuttering the Mack Road store along with a Broadway location in March 2020, as reported by Supermarket News at the time. The space has sat empty for years, making the arrival of a major grocery anchor a meaningful moment for the surrounding commercial corridor.

H Mart's plans for the Mack Road site were first made public in June 2023, and as recently as January 2026, the company was reportedly still targeting an early spring opening, per ABC10. That target has since slipped, with construction and inspection delays continuing as the building awaited its certificate of occupancy. ABC10's reporting attributed the opening delay to the renovation process and ongoing building inspections. H Mart did not respond to a comment request from the Sacramento Bee about its current timeline.

Why South Sacramento Is Such a Natural Fit

The demographics around Mack Road help explain why H Mart chose the site in the first place. Asian residents make up 19.96% of Sacramento County's total population, more than 322,000 people, according to data from Be Healthy Sacramento. In the surrounding 95832 ZIP code near Highway 99, that share climbs to 33.77% of the local population, per the same source.

Valley Mack Plaza itself is no small stage for a grocery debut. The shopping center spans 126,493 square feet at Mack Road and Valley Hi Drive, with daily traffic counts exceeding 41,000 vehicles passing along Mack Road, according to a LoopNet listing for the property. Once open, H Mart will compete directly with established local grocers including the 99 Ranch Market at Southgate Plaza on Florin Road, Seafood City on Mack Road, and the 160,000-square-foot KP International Market in Rancho Cordova, all of which currently serve South Sacramento's Asian food shoppers.

A Familiar Format Heading to the Capital Region

H Mart describes itself as America's premier Asian food destination, providing groceries, everyday essential needs and upscale products, and sells Korean and other Asian goods across its stores. Founded in New Jersey in 1982, the chain now operates more than 90 stores across the country and is considered the largest Asian supermarket chain in the United States. The nearest existing locations to Sacramento are in San Francisco, Dublin and San Jose.

H Mart's food courts have become a signature draw at other locations, typically featuring vendors like Paris Baguette, Paik's Noodles, Gong Cha and Oh! K-Dog. Hoodline previously reported that H Mart's first East Bay store opened in Dublin in March 2026, converting a 27,237-square-foot former hardware store into a supermarket with an 8,552-square-foot food hall. The company is also continuing its Northern California expansion with plans for a multi-level flagship store in Fremont later this year, adding to existing outposts in San Francisco and San Jose.

Sacramento's delayed opening is unfolding amid a broader surge in Asian grocery retail across Northern California. Four major chains — H Mart, Mega Mart, Osaka Marketplace and T&T Supermarket — have announced plans for at least 13 new stores across the region since 2020, according to Wind Newspaper. For now, South Sacramento shoppers are left watching the Mack Road storefront, sign finally in place, for any sign of a move-in date.
