Parents in Plymouth looking for a low-sensory activity for their children can mark their calendars for October 26, as the Plymouth Community Center at 14800 34th Ave N is opening its doors from 8:30-10:30 a.m. for Sensory-Friendly Sunday Demo & Play Day. The event is free of charge and is designed to cater to the needs of children who may feel overwhelmed by standard play environments.
The morning is set aside for children of all ages and will feature a range of adapted amenities such as the gymnasium and the Kids Ultimate Backyard Experience (K.U.B.E.) indoor playground, during the session, the Community Center will limit attendance and dim the lights also overhead music will be switched off to minimize the risk of sensory overload, a specialized sensory room will also be open for those who may require a quiet space for breaks. According to the event announcement on plymouthmn.gov, additional play equipment such as blocks and sensory bins will be provided, alongside tumbling and sports gear, and for those particularly sensitive to noise, a number of noise-cancelling headphones will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Notable in this month's iteration of Sensory-Friendly Sundays is a special demonstration of the Young Athletes Program, a venture by Special Olympics Minnesota, which introduces children aged 2-7 to various sports. In collaboration with Anna Elder Homes, attendees will have the chance to interact with the program, pose questions, and see the equipment utilized. The added benefit is that while kids get active and play, parents are encouraged to network over complimentary coffee and pastries.
Although the event at the K.U.B.E. is free, courtesy of support from Anna Elder Homes interested parties are reminded to register before the day the press release advises parents and guardians looking to secure a spot for their children to hit the web and register promptly at the provided url, while aiming to foster an environment of inclusion and adaptation the event coordinators evidently seek to ensure a safe and controlled space where enjoyment is not an afterthought but the centerpiece the very foundation of their efforts.
