As October ushers in darker days and grayer skies, Portland's cycling community is gearing up for a visible display of safety and solidarity. The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has announced a group bike ride slated for next Tuesday, October 28th, to encourage cyclists to "see and be seen" in the diminishing light of fall. Participants are urged to don their most conspicuous gear and light up their bikes for the evening event.
According to a social media post by PBOT, the gathering will kick off at Salmon Springs fountain at 5:30 p.m. where cyclists can flaunt their bright attire and get their hands on some reflective swag. Additionally, PBOT promises to have a BIKETOWN staff member on-site to provide aid to anyone interested in signing up for BIKETOWN for All. The ride is scheduled to officially begin rolling out at 6:00 p.m., encompassing a 7-8 mile trek through the city's east side. In an effort to make the ride inclusive, the pace is set to be easy, ranging from 8-10 mph, ensuring no rider gets left behind.
The event is not just for seasoned cyclists; beginners and families are also welcome to join the community ride. The route has been carefully planned through streets and paths that will boost participants' confidence biking during the "grey months," as the nights steadily draw in. The ride aims to culminate at Revolution Hall, where attendees have the option to purchase food and engage in post-ride socialization.
For those without wheels but eager to partake, there's no reason to miss out. PBOT is offering free BIKETOWN codes, making it easier for everyone to get involved. Details about the event and how to obtain the free codes are available on the PBOT event page. As the days shorten, this initiative not only promotes visibility on the roads but also aims to strengthen community ties among Portland's cyclists, proving that not even the cloudiest of skies can dim the spirit of this vibrant city's residents.
