The City of Portland has confirmed receiving a formal inquiry from the U.S. Department of Justice, according to a statement released on October 3. The inquiry coincides with the city’s ongoing legal challenge against the deployment of the National Guard in Portland.
City officials said they are still reviewing the federal government’s requests and have declined to share specific details. “We are still reviewing this inquiry and do not have a comment at this time on specific requests lodged by the federal government,” according to the City of Portland.
Mayor Wilson expressed support for the Portland Police Bureau, citing confidence in local law enforcement. According to the City of Portland, “Mayor Wilson has full faith in the Portland Police Bureau’s commitment to protecting public safety, upholding the rights of all individuals to lawfully assemble, and impartially enforcing the law.”
The Justice Department has not released information on the scope or intent of the inquiry. Meanwhile, the city continues its separate court case challenging what it has described as the unlawful deployment of the National Guard.
Further updates are expected once the city completes its review of the federal requests.
