Early Monday morning, motorists in Boyle Heights were met with major delays as a tank truck, carrying an unspecified quantity of propane, overturned on the southbound 5 Freeway transition to the 60 Freeway. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the incident, logged as INC#0283, occurred at approximately 4:59 AM. The single-tank big rig rollover prompted LAFD units to assume a defensive position until it could be determined how to safely handle the situation.
The LAFD has reported that there was no active fire following the rollover and that the tank truck was powered by diesel and not an alternative or electric fuel source. The driver of the truck was medically evaluated on the scene. Luckily, there have been no further injuries reported amongst those near the incident. Fire station 2 and various specialized units, including Hazmat teams and emergency medical personnel, were deployed to manage the situation.
Later updates from the LAFD clarified the condition of the overturned truck. The department's communication indicated that no active leak of propane had been found, and the vessel could be safely uprighted without the need to offload its hazardous cargo. The site's control transitioned to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), who proceeded to work with private contractors for the repositioning of the tanker and subsequent clean-up.
As a result of the incident, CHP issued a SIG alert, warning drivers of expected prolonged closures on the freeway while clean-up operations were carried out. There was also a report of a minor injury to one LAFD member who was being evaluated on the scene. For further details on the traffic and the incident, queries have been directed to CHP. This transportation mishap created a significant interruption in the early hours, affecting countless commuters and prompting a swift response from emergency services to contain the potential threat.
