Roane County has clinched a deal with Radiant Industries to house the world's premier factory for mass-producing nuclear generators, with a hefty $280 million investment earmarked for the project in Oak Ridge, a move set to generate 175 jobs, the company announced yesterday. The facility will be dedicated to the construction of Radiant's Kaleidos, a one-megawatt portable nuclear generator pegged as a trailblazer in clean energy, geared toward military, disaster relief, and isolated areas that require dependable power sources.
The announcement stamps Tennessee's growing footprint in the nuclear sector, marking it as the sixth company to set roots in the state, supported by the Governor’s Nuclear Energy Fund, which boasts $70 million. Past years have witnessed the Oak Ridge Corridor lure high-profile nuclear endeavors, including Oklo, Orano, Kairos Power, and Type One Fusion, cumulating more than $10 billion in capital commitments and the promise of over 2,500 new jobs, according to a Roane County press release.
At the hub of this surge is the Oak Ridge Corridor Development Corporation (ORCDC), a consortium geared at economic upliftment spanning Roane County, Anderson County, and the City of Oak Ridge, specifically fostering the nuclear energy niche. "I’m excited to welcome Radiant to Roane County – the most nuclear-friendly community in the country," Roane County Executive Wade Creswell stated in the release, stressing the alignment of the community's nuclear prowess and Radiant's ambitions.
The adherence to clean energy and Tennessee's conducive business surroundings have not gone unnoticed, with Radiant's selection of Oak Ridge seen as a testament to the state's emerging role as a leader in reliable energy production. "We chose Oak Ridge, Tennessee, because of their strong workforce, the community’s rich nuclear heritage and the public’s second-to-none nuclear IQ," said Tori Shivanandan, Chief Operating Officer, Radiant in a statement that appreciates the public’s deep understanding of the nuclear sector and the state's supportive business environment, "Just as importantly, the state’s business-friendly environment gave us the immediate regulatory certainty we needed to move fast and be up and running to meet growing customer demand for our Kaleidos nuclear generators," Shivanandan told Roane County TN official website, making it clear that the impetus was on meeting customer demands promptly, and that construction is expected to commence shortly.
