New rules for amplified sound will take effect at the beginning of 2026 to reduce late-night music noise in busy neighborhoods. The city council approved the ordinance, which is scheduled to start on January 1, 2026, according to a report on Raleigh's official website.
The new guidelines are designed to address both residents’ need for quiet and businesses’ use of amplified music. Following sound tests by Sound City Planning and feedback from an online survey, the city established different noise limits for three areas: Glenwood South, the wider city, and certain permitted venues. The rules also distinguish between dB(A), which measures typical sounds such as conversation, and dB(C), which measures low bass sounds.
Starting at 2 a.m., amplified sound must not be heard beyond a 25-foot radius until 10 a.m. Violators of the ordinance may receive a civil complaint and a fine of up to $1,500 after three offenses. A fourth violation can result in a ban on using sound equipment outdoors for 18 months. This update follows the City Council’s summer directive to review sound management rules, according to the city’s announcement.
