Raleigh is making it easy for paddling enthusiasts to enjoy kayaking even in chilly weather. The city is hosting Open Kayak Pool Sessions at Optimist Pool, welcoming everyone from experienced playboaters to beginners. These sessions offer a safe, indoor space to practice skills or try kayaking for the first time, according to the City of Raleigh.

Scheduled most Fridays from 5 - 8 p.m., November through March, these open sessions are designed to provide a warm and comfortable environment to continue practicing during the off-season. For newcomers eager to quickly absorb the basics, they offer "a brief basic boat orientation," although there's no formal instruction involved.

To take part, participants will need the Kayak Pool Session Pass, which is absolutely free and necessary to check in at the pool. Once you've registered for a membership, you can easily pay for any daily sessions or equipment rentals on site. For those looking for a bit more personalized assistance, Private Roll Instruction sessions are available at a price of $41 each. These are slotted for one hour before the general sessions, at 5 - 6 p.m. and 6 - 7 p.m., allowing for more focused guidance in mastering kayak control, as detailed by the city's website.

Raleigh’s Parks and Recreation Department is supporting paddle sports through the colder months, giving enthusiasts a chance to stay active until spring. Full details on registration and what to expect are available on the Raleigh Parks and Recreation website. Participants are encouraged to register ahead of time and come prepared for indoor kayaking.
