The Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland is grappling with a series of unsettling vandalism incidents, as an unidentified individual continues to throw rocks through the windows of homes and cars. As reported by CBS News San Francisco, the spate of property damage has persisted for nearly a year, leaving residents anxious and on edge.
Luis Aguirre, a Rockridge resident whose home and car were targeted, recounted his experience, saying, per CBS News San Francisco, "We were literally just sleeping and at 6 a.m., we got rudely awakened at 6 in the morning with a fat rock thrown through our window," moreover, the second time a rock shattered his car's window, he managed to capture footage of the suspect freely walking the streets conducting these senseless acts of vandalism. These incidents have prompted residents to board up windows and raise their guard. The community has begun compiling security footage and information in hopes of stopping the chaos.
Financially, the string of attacks has taken its toll on Rockridge inhabitants; one homeowner expressed to KTVU the burden of spending approximately $9,000 on window repairs and preventive measures. Meanwhile, another neighbor on Vicente Street faced twice the trouble when their repaired window was hit again shortly after being mended, a rock narrowly missing someone sleeping inside during one of the strikes.
In response to the rock-thrower's onslaught, the Rockridge community is coming together in solidarity, with Aguirre spearheading the distribution of flyers to aid in identifying and capturing the suspect, Luis Aguirre mentioned, "It just looks like the same individual hitting houses randomly and for no real reason, not trying to steal anything," as tensions rise over the seemingly motiveless attacks. Oakland Police have acknowledged the situation and are investigating the incidents, though they haven't solidified a connection between the cases. Residents like Aguirre and Sam Dodge, another affected local who spoke to KTVU, focus on finding a resolution that restores peace of mind and potentially addresses the underlying issues the perpetrator faces.
