A Rutgers University student remains in critical condition following an incident at the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity house, which is under investigation for possible hazing. According to NBC New York, the university suspended the fraternity after a 19-year-old student was found unresponsive at a New Brunswick home early Wednesday last week.
Authorities responded to the scene after a disconnected 911 call led them to the College Avenue residence. The student was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in critical condition. Witnesses saw multiple police vehicles and ambulances at the location, abc 7 New York reported.
A source told abc 7 New York the student may have suffered an electrical injury, though this has not been confirmed. The fraternity’s national organization stated that the local chapter had received health and safety training last month and is now conducting its own investigation.
The national chapter placed Alpha Sigma Phi’s Rutgers chapter on interim suspension, adding that if hazing is confirmed by the university or law enforcement, the chapter will be permanently closed and individuals involved could face expulsion or legal consequences.
