Early this morning, a pedestrian was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle on northbound Highway 99, a stretch just shy of Mack Road in Sacramento, as confirmed by the California Highway Patrol. The fatal collision unfolded around 1:00 a.m., and, according to the CHP, involved a Honda Accord traveling at 65 mph in the highway's #1 lane, as reported by ABC10.
The unidentified pedestrian, whom authorities say was walking westbound in the northbound lanes of SR-99 when the incident occurred, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the driver stopping, pulling to the right shoulder, and waiting for emergency personnel to arrive, they continued driving the Accord on the highway until the crash happened which remains under investigation by the South Sacramento CHP office. Information from FOX40 adds that the pedestrian ended up resting in the roads' third and fourth lanes after impact.
Officials have ruled out alcohol and drugs as contributing factors for the driver who struck the pedestrian; the motorist cooperated with law enforcement and provided a statement. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office is tasked with releasing the identity of the deceased pedestrian once next of kin notifications are carried out. This detail was shared by KCRA, which is also following up for further updates on the story.
As the investigation into the exact cause of the crash persists the CHP has not yet offered an explanation for why the pedestrian was on the highway at such a perilous hour; meanwhile, the northbound section of SR-99 was closed until about 3:00 a.m., following the accident to facilitate preliminary investigations and to clear the site for subsequent traffic flow, the recovery process was difficult due to the impacted lanes and the involvement of emergency services, necessitating this closure.
