Salisbury's landscape is set to dramatically change with five major projects that promise a blend of modern convenience, and historical charm. As reported by the city's own website, a significant capital investment is funneling into the city, targeting infrastructure, redevelopment, and revitalization efforts.
Key to this transformation is the Salisbury Depot and Rail Upgrades, a project aimed at improving the safety and access of the rail corridor between Charlotte and Raleigh. The depot, purchased by the city for $3.5 million, is set for restoration, and will serve as both a hub for Amtrak passengers and a community space. Federal and state grants provide a significant portion of the funding, including $11.7 million in federal and state grant funds and $1.7 million from the state's Strategic Transportation Improvements Program. Yet, the City is also pitching in—$320,000 as a local match, and through the grant-covered ~$780K.
Another piece of Salisbury's future puzzle is the redevelopment of the former Wells Fargo building at 130 S. Main Street. Acquired in October 2022, the venue is expected to morph into a mixed-use space for events, meetings, and city offices. The initial design contract, valued at $300,000, was approved by the City Council back in August 2024. With renovation costs projected to hit somewhere between $7 million and $9 million, another round of grant assistance worth $850,000 from the North Carolina Department of Commerce has been secured.
The Empire Development Project is turning the gears on Salisbury's downtown revitalization, transforming the historic landmark into a bustling mixed-use site. With the City pushing through approvals in fall 2024 and spring 2025, the first phase of construction began in October 2024. The development includes townhomes, apartments, and retail space, representing an investment of $4,000,000—$200,000 of which comes directly from the city for infrastructure enhancements. When all phases are complete, the investment is expected to exceed $20 million, signaling a significant commitment to the city's core.
In a similar vein, The Plaza Building is seeing a new lease on life. Following a public RFP process initiated in 2022, the sale was approved by the Council in August 2025, with a development footprint of approximately $11.5 million dedicated to overhauling the building while keeping the ground-floor active and accessible.
Finally, the Main Street Streetscape revitalization project aims to repaint Salisbury's urban fabric. Boasting a six-block makeover, the city will see new sidewalks, ADA-compliant features, pedestrian lighting, enhanced greenery, and more.
