Over the past weekend, District 9 witnessed repeated instances of political graffiti scrawled across various sites, spurring Councilwoman Misty Spears to speak out against these acts of vandalism. In a statement released on the City's website, Spears expressed her “deep disappointment” at the sight of political slogans defacing both personal and city property; she underscored the place of respectful dialogue and lawful expression in civic discourse.
Spears' response elucidates the concerns that such illegal activities breed division within the community and detract from essential city functions — time, and resources are instead allocated to addressing such vandalism rather than being invested in public safety and city services which somewhat frustrates community members and city officials alike. "This kind of vandalism – no matter the message or motive – has no place in our community," Spears stated on the City's website, firm on the principle that the means of expression should align with the community's values.
The quick response of local residents in notifying authorities about the graffiti was acknowledged and praised by the councilwoman, resulting in the swift removal of much of the unsolicited art. City staff, along with the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), are actively engaged in the clean-up efforts; they remain on the lookout to prevent future incidents, while also working on identifying the perpetrators.
While expressing appreciation for those proactive citizens, Spears reiterated the inherent right of every resident to a safe and considerate neighborhood, such vandalism directly opposes this and what she sees as the broader expectations of a community founded on mutual respect and legality. "Thank you to the residents who quickly brought this to the District 9 team’s attention over the weekend," Spears commented on the City's website, a gesture that not only aided in expedient resolution but signals the collective vigilance and shared values of the District 9 community.
