A deputy from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office was fatally shot yesterday during a confrontation with an armed individual issuing threats. According to KCRA, the incident unfolded when deputies responded to a residence on Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga at approximately 12:37 p.m. Upon arrival, Deputy Andrew Nunez, 28, was met with gunfire and later succumbed to his injuries after being airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
The suspect engaged deputies in a high-speed chase on eastbound Interstate 210, reaching speeds to reportedly exceed 150 miles per hour, before being apprehended using a pursuit intervention technique. The unnamed suspect, now in stable condition at a hospital, is expected to face murder charges post-medical clearance. Deputy Nunez leaves behind a wife, a 2-year-old daughter, an unborn child, his mother, and four siblings.
Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement paying homage to Nunez's bravery and his half-dozen years of service to the community, saying, "On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Nunez. His courage, compassion and dedication to protecting others reflect the finest traditions of law enforcement," as noted by KCRA. In recognition, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.
Fellow law enforcement from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office also expressed their deep-felt sorrow. "We extend our deepest condolences to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and to the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Andrew Nunez," they stated on a social media post. "Deputy Nunez’s dedication to protecting and serving his community will be remembered with the utmost respect and gratitude. His sacrifice will never be forgotten."
