An unfolding tragedy has taken place in San Bernardino County, where a sheriff's deputy, identified as Andrew Nuñez, was killed following a response to a possible domestic violence incident. According to ABC7, the 28-year-old deputy was mortally wounded by a gunman who subsequently fled the scene on a motorcycle. In a grievous dash, the suspect engaged law enforcement in a high-speed chase on the 210 Freeway before crashing into a car near exit 56 in Ontario.
The chase ensued after the deputy responded to a call in Rancho Cucamonga on the afternoon of October 28th. Upon arrival at the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive, deputies were fired upon, leading to Deputy Nuñez sustaining a fatal gunshot wound to the head, as ABC7 reported. A pronounced procession consisting of over 100 law enforcement officers later escorted Nunez's body from the hospital to the coroner's office.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, accelerated to triple-digit speeds and maneuvered dangerously into oncoming traffic several times before the eventual collision, as mentioned by FOX10 Phoenix. The aftermath of the incident revealed a bloody vest on the sidewalk and a shattered patrol vehicle window, hinting at the severity of the initial encounter.
In the wake of the incident, Governor Gavin Newsom paid homage to Deputy Nuñez, whose life and service were lauded as embodying "the finest traditions of law enforcement". The flag at the State Capitol will be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect, Newsom stated. As further details are anticipated from an official press conference, the suspect remains hospitalized and will be booked for murder upon medical clearance, as confirmed by the Sheriff's Department, potentially alongside domestic violence charges.
