The future of aviation in San Diego is taking shape with the unanimous approval of the Brown Field Airport Master Plan by the City Council. This significant milestone, reported by the City of San Diego, brings an updated vision for the airport's development, not seen since its last master plan in 1980. According to Jorge Rubio, A.A.E., Economic Development Deputy Director and Chief of Airports, "This Master Plan is long overdue," noting its potential to generate jobs, bolster cross-border commerce, and secure the airport's role as a regional linchpin for decades.

The 20-year roadmap laid out by the Master Plan is set to roll out in phases, enhancing infrastructure with improved runways, taxiways, and increased aircraft accommodations. The plan not only addresses the need to bring the airport up to the latest safety standards but also to quickly begin appeasing the growing demand for aviation in the area, as mentioned by the City of San Diego. It plots a strategy that considers new uses for the airport and the conservation of historical assets, like the original terminal building.

The community had a significant voice in shaping the Master Plan, thanks to a series of public workshops and Advisory Committee meetings that solicited feedback from stakeholders, such as airport users, residents, and regional agencies. The City Council also certified the Program Environmental Impact Report, ensuring the development aligns with environmental considerations.

As construction takes off under San Diego Airpark, LLC's lease agreement with the city, about 2,500 new jobs await Brown Field Airport. The hope is to also massively stimulate regional economic activity, with expected benefits reaching approximately $1.5 billion. This development includes a terminal home to a new general aviation customs inspection facility, part of the Master Plan.

Over the next five years, the Airports Division’s Capital Improvement Plan (ACIP) forecasts $18.9 million in infrastructure projects for Brown Field Airport. The FAA, Airports Enterprise Fund, and California Department of Transportation will be the primary funding sources, alleviating the city's general funds from the financial burden. A week ago, nearly $4 million from the FAA was secured to support these forthcoming improvements.
