Travelers at San Diego International Airport experienced over 70 flight delays and two cancellations today, exacerbating tensions and disappointments for those seeking to navigate the skies. According to CBS 8 data, Southwest Airlines bore the brunt of these delays, though several other carriers also reported setbacks.
This comes on top of a staggering 210 delays on Sunday, with Southwest again accounting for over half, as CBS8 reported. As for the cause, the current government shutdown has led to a severe increase in staffing shortages. The Federal Aviation Administration has noted the necessity of slowing down traffic into some airports to ensure safety amidst these reduced personnel levels.
The shutdown's effects spilled out across the terminal where passengers like Kasey Schroeder expressed a measured trust in the system despite the delays, telling NBC San Diego, “You just kind of have to trust that the people who are showing up really know how to do their job.” This sentiment was echoed by others who exhibited patience, frustration, and hope in equal measure as they dealt with the unfolding situation.
In a statement that resounded with weary travelers, one of them, Leah Lindborg, expressed her concern to NBC San Diego: "It's really frustrating I would say, it kind of gets annoying and then also our family plans got delayed also, and we had to figure out a new ride to get here.” With the stress of delays, travelers are advised by San Diego International Airport to check their flight status before heading out and to allot extra time for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and security checks.
