The San Diego Fleet Week festivities, an anticipated sequence of public and educational events, have been curtailed this year due to the persistent federal government shutdown. The Broadway Pier, which traditionally hosts the marquee events, will remain conspicuously absent from naval and coast guard vessels, much to the city's dismay. The cancellation affects a range of activities, including the popular Student STEM Days, which, according to the San Diego Fleet Week Foundation, drew an attendance of approximately 4200 students last year, with even more anticipated this year. "Every year we had more and more students in. Not only the military, but, you know, the tech community here in San Diego gets behind it," said Larry Blumberg, CEO of San Diego Fleet Week, in a statement given to KPBS.

Other engagements, like the public visitation times and the Veterans & Military Boat Parade, are also on the chopping block. Brian O'Rourke, a Navy spokesperson, expressed the shared sentiment of the naval community, "We’re disappointed, as our Sailors look forward every year to Fleet Week events, but Navy planners will begin preparing for our participation in the 2026 Fleet Week as early as January," he told the Times of San Diego. The government shutdown has not only affected San Diego's Fleet Week but has necessitated cancellations in San Francisco and other community events nationwide, according to O'Rourke.

Adjustments have been made to keep the spirit of Fleet Week alive, albeit on a smaller scale. The San Diego Fleet Week Foundation announced that while pier events are foregone, the Fleet Week Football Classic will proceed on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium. Moreover, Military Family Day has been rescheduled to a new venue on November 9, and the Enlisted Recognition Luncheon will take place at the San Diego Zoo on November 21. These pivots reflect a concerted effort to maintain a semblance of normalcy and celebrate the military community despite the federal stalemate.
