To enhance accessibility and safety for athletes with disabilities, the San Dieguito County Park's Miracle Field is slated for a noteworthy makeover, courtesy of a new partnership to rechristen the field as Padres Park. The County of San Diego reported that the County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to rename the field, solidifying a 15-year naming rights agreement with the San Diego Padres - and as expected, sports fans and field users alike are looking forward to both the new name and the upgraded facilities.
Funding for the revamped field, which boasts a price tag of $850,000 for new, ADA-compliant turf, has been a community-driven endeavor, the lion's share of the campaign was led by the Miracle League who amassed $600,000 from various sources including significant contributions, a hefty sponsorship from the San Diego Padres Foundation and also a substantial amount flowing from Board Chair Terra Lawson-Remer’s office through the Neighborhood Reinvestment Program, in conjunction with $250,000 from County Parks and Recreation's budget, these efforts combined have met the financial requirements for the project. This upgrade signifies more than just practical improvements; it's about ensuring inclusivity and the joy of baseball for everyone, regardless of physical ability.
Miracle Field, which opened in 2007, needs its surface replaced to meet current rigorous accessibility and safety standards. This includes smooth, seamless, and non-slip turf to accommodate various mobility aids, as well as the sturdiness to endure heavy use and the capability to stay cool for the comfort of the players.
