A massive search effort is underway in Monroe County for a 60-year-old Vonore man who went missing while boating last Saturday. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) received a report of his disappearance yesterday after he did not return from a fishing excursion the previous afternoon. As authorities canvass the area of the Ball Play Boat Dock off Highway 360, Sheriff Tommy Jones urged the community, "We ask that the public avoid the search area to allow first responders to conduct operations safely and efficiently," as quoted by WVLT.
The man's truck and boat trailer were found by deputies at the Ballplay Boat Landing, and not long after, they discovered his boat unoccupied a quarter mile upriver. In the drive, the boat was found with the lanyard for the emergency cut-off switch missing, and the engine was not running, as detailed in a statement retrieved by WATE. Given the complexity of the search, the MCSO's Marine Unit has been working closely with multiple agencies, including dive teams on standby and using sonar technology to methodically scan the river.
Sheriff Jones elaborated on the challenging conditions of the search, as "poor visibility" has hindered efforts, reported by WBIR. He noted that dive teams are prepared to enter the water once a specific area is identified. The broad coalition of units assisting in the search comprises local emergency management teams, fire departments, and specialized K-9 units from surrounding counties.
As efforts continue, the Sheriff's Office stands firm in its request for public cooperation. They have advised the avoidance of the search area to ensure the safety and efficiency of rescue operations. Despite the foreboding approach of nightfall, which could suspend search activities, the hope is to locate the missing boater as swiftly as possible.
