During an emphasis patrol in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, police detained a 29-year-old man early yesterday after he dropped an assault rifle from his vehicle. The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. in the 300 block of 2nd Avenue South, as officers monitored the area following bar closures to prevent gun-related incidents.
According to the Seattle Police Department Blotter, the suspect, whose firearm application had previously been denied, was in possession of a loaded short-barrel rifle with a thirty-round magazine. A sergeant detained the man without further incident after the weapon fell from his vehicle.
Following the investigation, police released the individual but referred charges of unlawful possession of a loaded rifle in a motor vehicle to the City Attorney’s Office. The firearm was seized as evidence.
Acting Assistant Chief Rob Brown noted that nightlife patrols have been effective in recovering illegally possessed firearms in areas affected by gun-related activity. The department’s emphasis patrols are part of broader efforts to reduce illegal gun possession and enhance safety in Seattle’s entertainment districts.
