Seattle's cultural calendar is heating up this October with the return of Turkfest, a vibrant celebration of Turkish and Turkic heritage at the Seattle Center. Slated for October 11 and 12, this free event serves up a cornucopia of traditions, tastes, and tales from the crossroads of Europe and Asia—right in the heart of the Pacific Northwest. According to the Center Spotlight, this year's theme is "From the Balkans to Middle Asia," showcasing the diverse influences that shape Turkic cultures.
For those with an ear for music and a foot for dancing, the lineup includes a range of acts from traditional folk to modern beats. Look forward to artists like Nihat Cem Inan and Ahmet Serkan, not to mention the lively beats of Curcuna Duo/Trio. Kids and adults alike can get their cultural fix with performances from the American Turkish Academy of Washington Kids Choir, and the Anadolu Turkish Musicians. A spectrum of dance, demonstrating the vibrant tapestry of cultures from Turkey to Turkmenistan and Bosnia & Herzegovina, will also take the stage.
It's not just about the performances; the festival's culinary offerings promise to tantalize taste buds. Turkish food vendors will be on hand, doling out a spread of kebabs, gözleme, and the sweet layers of baklava. Adding to the fun, festival attendees can put their appetites to the test in food-eating competitions or size up the skill of local bakers in the baklava competition. Amidst these festivities, a Turkish coffee corner offers a moment of respite to sit back and soak in the aromatic tradition of coffee brewing.
Family-friendly activities round out the immersive experience with educational offerings such as a Turkish 101 class, cultural exhibits, and a Turkish library book swap. "Turkish food, coffee, dance, and music bring a piece of Türkiye across the oceans and continents to Seattle," festival producer Burcu Birka shared in a statement obtained by Center Spotlight.
As part of the larger Seattle Center Festál series, Turkfest contributes to a year-long celebration of the region’s varied cultural landscape. With the backing of the City of Seattle and a host of partners, Seattle Center confirms its spot as a preeminent destination for arts and culture within the Pacific Northwest.
