Two 17-year-old boys were taken into custody on Sunday in Seattle after a failed attempt to evade police resulted in a car crash. The vehicle involved was reported stolen during an armed robbery earlier the same day, according to SPD Blotter.

The initial incident was reported on Oct. 12, when Seattle police, in conjunction with the Renton Police Department, identified and attempted to stop the stolen vehicle around 9:50 p.m. What began as a high-risk traffic stop quickly devolved into a chase as the driver bolted from Seattle officers, speeding southbound down Aurora Avenue North and running through several red lights. The chaotic pursuit came to an abrupt end when the car lost control and collided with an SUV before crashing into a fence in the Greenlake neighborhood.

Seattle’s Community Response Group (CRG) apprehended the driver immediately after the crash. Two other male occupants attempted to flee on foot in divergent directions, with CRG officers successfully capturing one of them nearby. Despite setting up a security perimeter and utilizing a K9 team, the third suspect eluded capture and is still at large.

Inside the wreckage, CRG officers observed multiple weapons abandoned by the teens, leading to the vehicle being impounded. The two arrested suspects now face multiple charges, including Eluding a Police Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. According to SPD Blotter, one of the suspects had been previously convicted and thus prohibited from carrying guns, while the other, being under 21 and pending adjudication, was also barred from firearm possession.

On Oct. 15, following the acquisition and service of a warrant, officers recovered several firearms from the stolen vehicle, including an extended round magazine and a drum magazine. The ongoing investigation into the initial carjacking incident has been referred by the General Investigations Unit detective to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and will be led by the Renton Police Department.
