A blaze involving a semi-truck on the 134 Freeway near Griffith Park on Friday evening turned the eastbound commute into a sluggish crawl. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that the fire began around 7:40 p.m. near the Forest Lawn Drive off-ramp, as shared by CBS Los Angeles. Twelve firefighters were dispatched to the scene, quickly subduing the flames that had engulfed several cars being transported by the semi.
Traffic flow was significantly impacted as the California Highway Patrol (CHP) orchestrated detours and lane closures. After the incident, the Forest Lawn Drive off-ramp was closed indefinitely, while authorities managed the scene and navigated through the remains of the charred vehicle. According to firefighters, there were no casualties, and the cause of the fire remained a question mark into the night.
The official alert from the Los Angeles Fire Department, posted on their website, detailed that "3 conventional fuel vehicles on top rack of auto hauler caught fire (unknown source of ignition)." The notification, publicized via LAFD alert, confirms that no one was injured in the event. The LAFD has not provided any further information on what initiated the fire.
Motorists were advised by the firefighters to anticipate prolonged delays on the eastbound 134 Freeway while cleanup operations continued. These traffic advisories and the emergency response showcased how a single incident can ripple through the city's arteries, reminding travelers of the fragility of our daily commutes. As of now, it remains uncertain when the off-ramp will reopen to the public. The CHP has not released any additional details regarding the ongoing traffic situation or the investigation into the cause of the fire.
