In a bold move standing up for fair wages, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) has put pressure on Frontier Communications. He is urging the company to seriously negotiate with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) to close a wage gap affecting Navajo Nation workers. The Senator made his concerns clear in a letter addressed to Frontier Communications CEO Nick Jeffery.

These employees, delivering vital telecom services to the Navajo Nation, are contending with a pay disparity that has been an issue for some time. "Yet, despite performing the same highly skilled work as their counterparts elsewhere in Arizona, employees on the Navajo Nation have raised concerns about a longstanding pay gap compared to Arizona employees in other parts of the state," said Gallego in a statement obtained by the press release published on his Senate website.

The existing contract between Frontier and the CWA expired back on March 29, and since then, the union has been working hard to get a fair contract that would remedy the wage gap. The ongoing negotiations are seen as a pivotal opportunity to redress this monetary imbalance for the 27 employees who have been on the short end.

Senator Gallego stressed the broader impact of this disparity, pointing out in his letter that the low pay for these 27 employees both harms their ability to live the American Dream and causes harm to their immediate families at a time of high costs for necessities like food and housing. Further emphasizing the critical nature of this situation, he highlighted how the proper compensation would not only reinforce fairness but would also bolster trust within Indigenous communities.
