Arizona Senator Mark Kelly is pushing for Congress to take immediate action to address the potential surge in healthcare costs for millions of Americans. According to an interview on NBC's Meet the Press, Kelly emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying, "It’s important for all Americans to know that this fight right now over this government shutdown is about one thing; it’s about the cost of their health care," as stated by the Arizona Senator's Office.
While talking to CNN's State of the Union, Kelly highlighted the real-world impact of the healthcare debate, bringing to light the story of a Phoenix woman's financial peril. "The reason we’re here is because this administration is about to drive our healthcare system for 23 million people over a cliff. When these subsidies go away, people’s health care prices are going to triple," Kelly remarked, as noted by the Arizona Senator's Office press release. He continued with the story of an encounter with a woman from Phoenix named Cricket, who faced a steep medical bill due to a head injury. Without the Affordable Care Act, she could have lost her home.
Kelly is calling for genuine negotiation and leadership to prevent healthcare from falling off this metaphorical cliff. According to an interview from Meet the Press, Kelly stated, "We need a real negotiation. We need this corrected for the American people. For so many people, their healthcare is running towards a cliff, and if we don’t fix this, it's going to go right over it," as stated by the Arizona Senator's Office.
The Senator also criticized the Congressional Republicans for their absence during this critical time. Talking to State of the Union, Kelly voiced his frustration stating, "For months we have been trying to negotiate with the White House and Republicans in the house and in the Senate on health care. [...] What did speaker Johnson do, his republican members have been gone for 4 weeks now. They’ve only worked 14 days since July 25th. They should be here negotiating." This sentiment was echoed in the Arizona Senator's Office press release, indicating a direct call to action for political leaders to remain engaged and work towards a resolution.
In addition to healthcare concerns, Kelly also expressed reservations about the president's treatment of the legal system and the federal workforce. "Our legal system has become incredibly more complicated with the a president who will send orders via Truth Social in a direct message to the attorney general to prosecute people," Kelly said on Meet the Press, stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law. He also accused the president of politicizing federal agencies during the State of the Union discussion, asserting that laying off federal workers during the government shutdown was an unnecessary action impacting individuals who should not be in this predicament, as per the Arizona Senator's Office.
