The St. Louis County Pet Adoption Center is preparing for an upcoming increase in adoption fees. Beginning October 29, the fee to adopt a pet will rise from $40 to $80, according to KSDK. This change, approved by the St. Louis County Council to address a $60 million budget shortfall.
Amid concerns over the fee increase, St. Louis County Public Health Director Dr. Kanika Cunningham described the situation as a public health issue, pointing out the high cost of caring for nearly 175 dogs in a facility built for 80, which amounts to nearly $111,000 per month. Both Cunningham and County Executive Sam Page emphasized the importance of adopting animals quickly to reduce shelter costs.
While the county seeks to promote adoptions, Dr. Cunningham and County Executive Page highlighted that waiving adoption fees can help encourage faster adoptions and support the animals' well-being. They emphasized that adoption fees alone do not cover shelter expenses, which remain significant, according to a statement from Dr. Cunningham to Spectrum Local News.
Council member Dennis Hancock, who led the effort to raise adoption fees, said the new rates will bring St. Louis County in line with neighboring shelters. However, the council is open to reviewing the policy if adoption numbers drop. Concerns that free adoption events might result in animals going to abusive homes have been challenged by research showing no evidence for this claim.
As the fee increase approaches, public officials, the shelter, and St. Louis residents are working together to find homes for as many animals as possible, First Alert 4 reported.
